Auto Floor Mats are Your Mate

bo bee asked:

Most states around the US get to experience all the seasons of the  year. Each season having its own sort of weather problems: slush, snow, rain, hail or whatever it may be, these effects not only hinder the outside appearance of your vehicle, but can also damage the inside as well.

As an extra option when buying a new or used vehicle, floor mats can get very expensive. Because these mats are used every time you get in and out your car, wear and tear can leave your car very messy during any weather storm. Some people track mud, dirt, grime, snow and debris into the vehicle. All these elements will damage your interior carpet and start to corrode your steel floor panels. After many years of owning a Toyota Camry, I’ve noticed rust under my car interior floor mats that eventually got weak and broke a hole on the bottom side of y car.

My car was quickly lost its value and I was starting to feel cold drafts near my feet during the winter. If I were to have purchased some rubber floor mats that prevent all this damage over the years, my interior would be looking perfect. Aftermarket mats are now weather proof, provide lots of traction, and have a factory fit. These mats even come for the trunk as well for those unsightly spills from trips to the supermarket.

Choose from the many companies out there providing cargo liners and all weather floor mats. Each may have their own designs and materials used for construction. So go for style. Or go for performance. Either way,  you’ll be happy that you have them when those weather storms hit.

Floor Mats, Now With More Rubber

Jimmy Plant asked:

OEM floor mats are not always made to strict quality standards. They can often get worn out in a matter of months, fraying at the edges and sporting deep wear spots under your heel. The good news is that they are easy to replace. The even better news is that there are many quality manufacturers out there who know how to make a floor mat out of high quality nylon that can withstand the abuse. Available options include OEM replacements, custom logo floor mats, super plush carpeted floor mats and even some high quality rubber floor mats. OEM replacements are usually the entry level, mid-grade floor mat. They are a no-frills, get the job done floor mat. Logo floor mats are usually made from higher quality fabrics than your OEM mats, providing you with a more durable mat that adds a customized touch to your interior. Vehicle logo emblems, NFL, MLB, NBA, NCAA and military logo floor mats are the most common types, however it is possible to find custom logo floor mats available for special order. Plush carpeted floor mats are the top-of-the-line; up to 48 ounces in weight and made from premium nylons, these mats will last forever and can even reduce the amount of road noise in your cabin. Most carpeted floor mats are available in various colors, the most common of which are black, grey and tan.

Rubber floor mats, on the other hand, are a whole different animal. These mats, also commonly referred to as All Weather floor mats, are often quite thick and they will have some sort of a tread on them. This tread gives your feet traction and allows dirt, grime, snow and water to run off your feet, but stay out of your carpets. If you live in a climate that sees a lot of snow, a high-walled rubber floor mat will do the best job protecting your auto carpet from mildew-inducing moisture. Rubber floor mats can often work as a complete floor liner, giving you 100% coverage on the carpet that really sees foot traffic. These rubber floor liners are usually a 1-piece custom molded mat, however it is not uncommon to find them in a 3-piece overlapping design. The more versatile 3-piece design is used to accommodate irregularities in the floor, like having a center hump under the carpet or to help make provisions for stick shifts and center consoles.

How to Care for Your Automobile Floor Mats

Art Gib asked:

Automobile floor mats are very important in order to maintain a clean vehicle. These mats work in many ways by providing protection for the carpet in the vehicle and making it easier to clean.

The use of automobile floor mats provide total protection for the carpeting in a vehicle. If your carpeting is light colored, such as beige or light gray, it definitely needs to be protected. After all, if you are walking in the mud, in snowy conditions, or if you have a lot of dirt on the bottom of your shoes, you will track it into the vehicle and onto the carpet. This is very hard to get out of the carpet and eventually the carpeting of the vehicle will never be able to look its natural color again but instead have to be replaced.

Floor mats collect rocks, dirt and grime from the bottom of your shoes. They also catch crumbs from food when you are eating too. Using automobile floor mats makes it easier to clean the vehicle from this debris because they are removable. You can pull them out of the vehicle at the car wash or at home and spray them off with a high pressure hose really well. As a result, the carpet will remain looking new for longer.

There are several ways to clean a floor mat. The most common method is simply to vacuum them clean as they get dirty. Rubber floor mats can be simply sprayed down with water but carpeted floor mats may need shampooing every now and then to maintain a clean smell and appearance.

However, most people choose not shampoo their floor mats as they are meant to get dirty which, in turn, prevents the actual floor of your vehicle from getting dirty. Simply removing them, shaking out the dust, and perhaps running over them with a vacuum is often sufficient for most folks. On the other hand, if the floor mats are the only surface you see and you want the car to look its best, a little more effort may be required.

When you use floor mats for an automobile you are making a good decision towards maintaining a nice looking carpet. You don’t have to use the standard issue floor mats that come with a vehicle. Today you can purchase floor mats that match your personality style with designs on them like flames, roses, symbols and almost anything else.

There are many mats you can buy for the floor of your automobile which provide the perfect solution for protecting the carpet from mud, snow, and dirt tracked into the vehicle from the bottoms of your shoes. This is the best solution to protecting the carpet and making it much easier to clean the vehicle.

Essentials for Life on the Road: Rubber Floor Mats & Hard Truck Bed Covers

Mike Rosania asked:

My fascination with traveling all began two years ago. I was at a Barnes and Noble and came across Kerouac’s legendary novel, “On the Road.” I figured enough people have recommended it; I might as well see what all the hype is about. Sure enough, they were right—the book is awesome! The plot is based on Kerouac’s pickup-and-go attitude and everything he encounters while exploring all that America has to offer. I was fascinated and I wanted more. Next, I got my hands on a copy of “The Electric Cool-Aid Acid Test,” which is of the same flavor. These stories fascinate me, so I did what every other recent college grad does—traveled. While most people want to backpack through Europe, bouncing between hostels and drinking absinthe, I instead decided to take a deeper look at America the beautiful.

Hitch hiking is something of the past. With all the crazies and nut jobs out there today, you would have to be out of your mind to catch a ride with a complete stranger. Plus, I just got a new truck. And what better way to break in my new ride than by taking a nice long road trip. I didn’t want to plan my trip too much. You need to leave room for adventure and spontaneity.

I was starting in Northern Maine and all I knew was that I wanted to taste the salty water of the Pacific Ocean. So I packed some clothes, blankets and food into my Toyota Tacoma and hit the road. It was summer, so rather than staying in a hotel, I laid down a blanket in my truck’s bed to rest my bones at night.

I saw a lot of new things and really got to experience Middle America, because there is a lot of it. I would drive for days and the landscape always remained the same. I was starting to wonder if I would ever escape the flat, cornfield-lined highways; until I hit Colorado. I basked in nature’s beauty as my truck climbed through the Rockies. That John Denver knew what he was talking about. The mountains were gorgeous. I continued on to hit Utah, which has the bluest skies I have ever seen. From there I was on to Northern California.

After a few days of tasting my fair share of wines and relaxing in the vineyards of Sonoma, I continued on down to San Diego. Overall, I had a great trip. I met a lot of characters, heard a lot of accents, and ate a lot of different foods. And I encourage you to get to know your own country because each city has something to offer. I also recommend two products to anyone considering embarking on a journey of this magnitude.

First, for those who have trucks, a hard truck bed cover is really helpful. It covered all my gear so I didn’t have to worry about it falling out along the way or being left out in the rain. Personally, I recommend Undercover tonneau covers because they have hinges that allow you to prop up the back, turning your truck bed into a nice shaded hang out. Secondly, for those of you who don’t have trucks, I recommend a set of rubber floor mats. I was always getting out of the car and exploring—walking through fields, trails, dirt paths—and tracked a lot of mud and funk into my truck. My mats stopped the gunk from my shoes from staining my carpet. And I hosed them off easily when they got dirty.

Review on Rubber Floor Mats After our Spring Break Vacation

Andrew Bernhardt asked:

So to help paint a realistic picture here, I first need to describe the absolute reckless and careless nature of my brother’s children. He’s a great parent, but perhaps a bit mellow on the discipline end of things. One example that first pops in my mind is of a road trip to Palm Springs that we made in my Chevy Camaro last spring break.

We were all very excited because this is a yearly trip that we have been making since being children, but when I pulled up at my brother’s house, out came the destructive rats from their house and in they came through the passenger window. That’s right, they had jumped through the passenger window just like they saw the actors do on Dukes of Hazzard. Their muddy feet went all over my Sheepskin seat covers! I couldn’t believe it.

So the first attempt that I made to clean up any further messes was to make sure they stayed buckled up. This was important for their safety as well as for the preservation of my sweet Camaro. Needless to say, the seat belts kept them buckled up but their arms and feet were still flying all over the place while I was driving. I’ve never seen a brother and sister fight and play as much as these two do. One second they **** each other, and the next second they are best friends.

Luck would have it….I remembered that I received a great gift from my father for Christmas. He sent me some car mats for the trip because we had several outdoor activities planned including hiking, swimming, etc., and the mats were still in my trunk.. So I promptly pulled over at the next exit which happened to be in the lovely town of Fontana. What a place! I’ll write more about the Stangs and Chevelles that I saw out there during our brief stay. They also have a great race track there.

The mats were a total success. They were rubber mats and covered the entire flooring of my Camaro! So all I had to do was take the suckers out and hose them down to get all of the mud that the kids tracked in. Simply put, I recommend rubber mats to anyone that has passangers that are anything like my niece and nephew :)

Many of these mats are custom-fit for your ride. This was a major plus because some of the mud stains could have ruined my interior, but the mats held on to the mud like David Tyree did for the Giants in the Super Bowl.

How do I remove dried mud/chalk completely from rubber floor mats?

chevrolet_camaro_owner asked:

The chalk in the mud leaves big white marks on the mats, and it’s very hard to get rid of them. I have tried all kinds of cleaning products, plus leaving the mats in warm water for several hours and then scrubbing them. But every time they dry I can see some of the chalk is still there. Any suggestions?
They’re washed once a week, so it’s not because the mud is very old or anything.
