How to get rid of strong scent on new plastic/vinyl floor mats?

I purchased some basic (cheap) vinyl floor mats for my car to help keep the rug mats nice and clean. The “new” plastic smell is so strong that I don’t want to put them in the car. How can I get rid of the smell? Air them out? Put them out in the sun? Help!!!

hanging them in the sunshine for a day should do the trick. Spraying them with anything would be moot as it would just meld with the stench and make it really bad.
